Women in Design
Brief: Create a poster to promote an exhibition about Women in Design.
The typography was inspired by great and famous women in design and designed by me, a woman in design myself. The pen and the line drawing of the woman’s face represents both handmade and digital graphic design. I specifically designed the outline to be simple so it’s up for interpretation, a way to representing women without stereotyping a certain look. Also, I specifically used the colour blue as often it can be a stereotypical ‘masculine’ colour, I wanted to subvert this by using it on a poster all about women.
During the development stages I sketched out my ideas roughly, playing around with the title of the exhibition ‘Women in design’ coming up with unique and exciting ways the letters could fit together on the page. The style of typography was inspired by designers like Jessica Walsh, Corita Kent and Paula Scher; they use playful handmade typography, that gives their designs unique character. Much of my inspiration also came from old film posters such as Metropolis (1926) and Vertigo (1950), which both use unusual hand-drawn typography.
