New Laws
Brief: Design the branding for a new fictional science channel, including a logo sting and brand awareness site.
The designs for this project are based on the idea of ‘exploring space’ and learning about the new possibilities within science. Much of the imagery is inspired by orbiting planets, cells multiplying, dividing etc and changing atomic structures.
The research for this project began by examining existing channel logos and their stings to understand how other channels adapted their flat 2D logo into an animated form. For example, in Sky’s stings, created by Venturethree, the logo shell remained the same but exterior elements interacted with the logo. However, many of the logo stings were more complicated than just the logo moving; many were longer and probably had detailed timelines and storyboards. Therefore, I tracked back the steps of the creation back to gather a more precise understanding of how the animation comes together as one cohesive piece.
With the brief being so broad as simply 'science' this subject is so vast with biology, chemistry and physics. I research these subject broadly but then my research became more specific into topics such as redshift, CRISPR genetic engineering and the Higgs Boson, all of which had strong visuals. However, the concept that gained the most interest was gravitational waves. The first gravitational wave detected was the result of two massive black holes merging. While researching the visualisations of this event, some stunning and usual visual imagery came to light. When looking deeper into the imagery of gravitational waves and black holes visuals of circles rotating, spinning, merging and orbiting became a running theme in the world of science. The visual style of elements, planets and atoms orbiting became the basis for the visual concept.
The concept for the website interaction is a continuation of the direct mail but in a more animated interactive way. The user is guided to ‘explore the space’ and as they move the cursor over the black page they will find the dots to reveal what the channel includes. Once all the dots are found they merge together in a similar way to the sting and expand filling the page with colour. The user is then taken straight to the home page with the logo and as they scroll down the tv shows, films, etc are listed using images. The goal for the branding of the New Laws channel was to have a cohesive journey through the three platforms from the logo to the direct mail and website. The intention is to show the connectivity of science in space and time invoking the vastness of space and the exciting New Laws of science.
